I wanted to write and thank you for five years of hard work on Indaba. It is hard to believe how long it has been! When we started working on this project, there was no commercial software that met Better World Books' needs, even though we only had 5,000 books at the time. Since then, software companies have launched and spent millions of dollars trying to build software to answer this need in the market. But there is still only one system that can meet the needs of Better World Books, and building that system was one of the smartest things we did in the early days of our company. While our competitors wait for the next release of commercial software that may never meet their needs, we can specify exactly the priorities and capabilities we need to keep being successful.
Today, the application runs faster with millions of books on 17 markets than it did with 5,000 books on two markets in 2003. That is what five years and hundreds of releases will do for you! Over that time, I've learned a lot about Russian programmers. How smart they are, and also how stubborn they are. :) And when they're being stubborn, there is usually a good reason, so I've learned that it is best to listen. I've also learned that they like to go drinking for two weeks during the January textbook rush. Thanks to those on the team that take a few days off from the big New Years parties to be "on call" during those important times.
